The fashion moguls, fortune tellers, marketing analysts and pop culture scholars may have missed mentioning this in their forecast for the year 2009 but then again, the craze over attitude shirts which made a cross-over from the year 2008 is probably too obvious that it goes without saying. Several shops that sell these talking tees have sprung up all over and they cater to whatever taste; be it nationalistic, loyalty to one’s alma mater, naughty, nasty, flirty, funny or simple.

An interesting observation is that some of these shirts are not actually made from the best quality if materials yet they still sell like hot cakes. Apparently, people buy them primarily for the inscriptions, not the style or the comfort or the quality of the material used, although these things still matter. A lot of people, especially the young ones seem to enjoy basking in the attention the statement shirts call for. The shirts have become literal fashion statements and proofs of character.

This simple trend in clothing has a deeper implication relevant to any enterprising individual. The message is clear: any product that gives one an outlet of their individuality will do insanely well in the market. The attitude shirts and the band shirts are just the beginning. One could do so much more with random items like bags, note pads, mugs and tumblers. There is so much wit and personality to express; the possibilities are endless.

Certain seasons and holidays bring about two opposite, yet interconnected phenomena: the transportation of funds from one person’s pocket to another one’s cash register. While it is practically impossible to never be the consumer; the smart person would of course, prefer to be the latter instead of the former.

Why not? For instance, if the holiday season provides for a great excuse and opportunity for people to part with their money, why not be at the receiving end? During Christmas, it would be a great time to make crafts and trinkets perfect as decorations and accessories or extra special greeting cards. One could also make a lot from baking cakes and pastries since sweets are a popular choice as presents during the holidays. When summer comes along, selling your homemade concoction as refreshments right on your front porch is an advisable enterprise. If you’re the artsy fashionista type, you could design simply beach wear are accessories using cheap yet colorful materials.

This type of business has its hassles though. One has to exert extra effort into finding out what would be a hit during a particular season. However, the most obvious disadvantage is the simple fact that the business venture could only exist as a temporary enterprise. Although this is actually an advantage for students and other persons who wish to make an extra buck during the holidays.

Running a business is a very challenging task; one has to be equipped with a bottomless think tank, impeccable judgment as well as great foresight. You have to be able to tell what things your buying public will feel like spending their money on in the days and weeks to come, how they will react to changes in the economy or how the cost of production would change in the future.

But what if your business thrives on the tradition you have built? What if the loyalty of your clientele depends on how you keep with the running traditions of your business? This should not stop you from looking forward and keeping up with the times. However, you need to be careful of the things you choose to change.

Take for instance, a quaint ‘neighborhood’ restaurant. The locals are its regular customers and most of them have gotten used to the cozy atmosphere and the personal touch in the service provided. There are times when the clientele need not peruse through the menu because they have it nearly memorized. Acceptable changes could be made in the physical set-up of the restaurant but the place should remain homey and welcoming. The menu and the cooking style should be preserved because this is what gives the place its identity.

Stick only to the changes that will improve the service you provide and do not make changes that are too drastic or too obvious.
